The Jimi Project - Phil Brown

Gary Novak on drums and Jimmy Haslip on bass

Historically, remakes of Jimi Hendrix's music have been safe predictable clones of the originals. This is entirely understandable considering the exalted nature of the Hendrix legacy. There is almost a kind of heresy associated with the idea of in any way altering the original arrangements of those immortal recordings. This copying or cloning of Hendrix has even occurred when it wasn't Hendrix material! In such cases, the copying/cloning occurred on a stylistic level: such sincerely flattering imitation abounded in the 70's; there were records released in that era that were unabashed mimicries of the Hendrix guitar sound.

After 20 years of gradually building his rep as a reliable and versatile sideman on the Orange County, California circuit, guitarist Matthew Von Doran is finally stepping out as a leader in his own right with In This Present Moment. Produced by Jimmy Haslip, bassist with the internationally renowned Yellowjackets, this debut outing from Von Doran finds the guitarist surrounded by a cast of jazz heavyweights including saxophonists Bob Mintzer and Bob Sheppard, drummers Peter Erskine, Terri Lyne Carrington, Gary Novak and Marcus Baylor, B-3 organist Larry Goldings, bassists James Genus and Haslip himself. The Abercrombie/Erskine/Mintzer/Patitucci Band (a/k/a The Hudson Project) is comprised of four of the most acclaimed musicians in contemporary music, each of whom has led his own band, and received great critical acclaim both as a composer and a player.

On this DVD, the band performs a set of eight brilliant compositions—two by each member of the group—which range in style from the spiritual ballad feel of “The Well” by John Patitucci, to the second-line funk of “Cats and Kittens” by Peter Erskine, and from the country-inflected swing of “That's For Sure” by John Abercrombie, to the strutting groove of “Modern Day Tuba” by Bob Mintzer.

Interspersed between these phenomenal performances, each member of the group steps forward to discuss his own approach to playing his instrument and to playing in an ensemble.

Approx. Running Time: 105 Minutes. ENCODED FOR ALL REGIONS-NTSC. Playable on any DVD player as well as any computer with a DVD ROM or DVD RAM drive.

(...) it’s the hard-fought realization of Austria-to-Arizona transplant Harald Weinkum’s dream: an all-star bass version of composer Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero,” with its slowly intensifying melody and 3/4 bounce, accompanied by more bass-focused pieces in 3/4.(...) Harald goes to great, greasy lengths to show just how naturally funky three can be. (...) Harald’s groove work definitely raises three to the funk power: (...) A Bass Bolero is a fun record for bass players and a laudable accomplishment, but it’s also great music.

Neff Irizarry & Nepenthe.....

Guitarist Neff Irizarry and his group Nepenthe combine contemporary Jazz with Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and Puerto Rican styles of music in a way that few have attempted before: the absence of a piano player in a Latin group is rare if not unseen, but in this band - with saxophone, guitar, bass, drums and percussion- Neff fills the 88-key gap with clarity and fire. Guitaristic feast of montunos, guajeos, intriguing harmonizations, burning hardbop lines... the result is so interesting that it even gained world-renowned Yellowjackets bass player and Grammy Award winner Jimmy Haslip’s attention and brought about a fruitful co-operation, this debut CD by Neff called “Nepenthe” [=Gr solace for sorrow], which he co-produced, partly co-wrote and played on. <read more>

STEVE FISTER "Rock in a Blues Place" PRD 7145 2
release early 2004

Steve has been described as "a brilliant guitarist…he not only has soul in his fingers, he has heart in his songs" (Music Connection) and "a talented, versatile guitarist with a love and respect for the instrument's place in several genres" (All Music Guide). Steve has played in Lita Ford's band in the Eightees both live worldwide and on her hit studio albums but although this was eihtees hard rock, he never lost his passion for American rooted blues music. Guitarist Steve Fister's fourth solo album (first in Europe) includes musical guests Gregg Bissonette (Carlos Santana, Ray Charles), Tony Franklin (The Firm) Stu Hamm (Joe Satriani), Tommy Aldridge (Ozzy Osbourne), Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets). Eddie Tuduri (Dwight Yoakam, Marianne Faithfull), and Carmine Appice (Jeff Beck, Cactus)
Rock In A Blues Place ranges from wild lead and slide guitar excursions as highlighted on the muscular "Funny 'Bout The Money" and the hyperkinetic "One Way Ticket" to the more nuanced textures on the moody "New Beginnings" and the effortlessly melodic "White Light."
